For the past 5 years a gay man hasn’t paid his taxes in protest to the Defense of Marriage Act because he and his partner are not recognized federally. He is now facing up to 15 years in prison and his trial is set to begin November at the U.S. Tax Court in San Diego.
The IRS says they are legally bound to treat same-sex couples as single because of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
What do you all think of this? My partner and I were thinking of doing the same exact thing. Except we wouldn’t just not pay our taxes we would actually have them held in an escrow account. So the money would be there, but the government couldn’t have it until they finally recognized same-sex relationships. I mean they want our money for everything..we pay state taxes, local taxes and tons of federal taxes but yet we are not entitled to the same rights that the rest of the world is? Well if that’s the case then I don’t think they should be entitled to OUR money. I think that if enough gay and lesbian folks in the world would be willing to do the same that we could finally make a statement…..any thoughts on this??
