The attorney’s office for Polk County was responding to a “friend of the court” brief that was filed by gay and lesbian groups and lawmakers from Massachusetts.

Lamda Legal from New York filed a lawsuit in 2005 that resulted in Polk County ruling that Iowa’s gay marriage ban was unconstitutional. The brief was filed to support Lamda Legal.
