Connecticut Legalizes Gay Marriage

Connecticut’s highest court legalizes same-sex marriage after a 4 year legal battle in the state court system.

The Connecticut Supreme Court overturned a lower courts ruling by 4-3, allowing full-fledged marriage for same-sex couples.

The supreme court said that a ban on gay marriage is an infringement on the “fundamental right” of same-sex couples.

As you may (or may not already know) prior to this ruling Connecticut allowed civil unions for same-sex couples.

As of November 12, 2008, you can get married in Connecticut.  Please check out the Gay Marriage Guide for details.

Woohooooooo!!! Congrats President-Elect Barack Obama

Boy, I was so excited lat night when I heard that Barack Obama had won.  I was sick as a dog and even took Nyquil but something in me wouldn’t let me go to sleep until I knew this man had won.

You know I’ve voted in other elections before but this is the first time ever that I actually volunteered my time and energy for a Presidential candidate.  My partner and I volunteered for the Obama campaign to register voters and to make phone calls and yesterday I volunteered to canvass door-to-door.  I gotta tell you I had a blast!!!!!!  And meeting all of the people I met throught (very conservative and repulican) Chester County was awesome.  There were so many Obama supporters that it was just great.

I honestly feel that all of the volunteers made this election for Mr. Obama.  It feels good to know that our time and energy was well spent!

All I want to say to President Elect Barack Obama is please, please don’t throw the gay and lesbian community “under the bus” as Bill Clinton did (with Do Not Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act.)  We supported you along the way and I personally, have respected you for the fact that you were the only Presidential candidate ever that would bring up gay rights and issues no matter who your audience was.  I mean let’s face it, it’s easy to talk about gay rights and gay issues in front of a gay audience, but YOU would talk about gay rights and gay issues in front of non-gay dominated audiences…..I will always respect you for that, but NOW that we put you in office sir, please don’t let us down and please TAKE ACTION and don’t just give us words.  (Btw, my stepfather wasn’t going to vote for anyone this year, but he decided to vote for “his daughter”, aka me, and he voted for Obama, but Mr. Obama he’ll have his eye on you and he’ll be wanting to make sure that you DO actually do something to help gays and lesbians in this world.  Please do it….because if you don’t…..he already told me that he will be on my behind every chance he gets about you!)

I’m just asking that you do the right thing, President Obama, when it comes to gay and lesbian Americans…..and I know you know what the right thing is…..please don’t let us down.

Once again, Congratulations!  And thank you everyone that came out to vote.

Uganda Government to Punish You for Being Gay or Lesbian

The Ugandan Government said they will prosecute anyone who comes out as being gay or lesbian. Having sex with someone of the same sex in Uganda is punishable by by life imprisonment as it is a criminal offense.

By the way, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission said that they had uncovered evidence that the Bush administration has funded groups in Uganda that actively promote violence and discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

I don’t know much about Uganda, but what I do know is that I don’t want to go there!!!!! Anyone from Uganda out there? Heck, I don’t know how safe you’d feel admitting anything on a gay blog anyway…so nevermind. This is just insane. I know I don’t live there and I have no control over what happens there but I’m sorry for what you have to go through there……….if there’s away we can help from here, please let us know.

Iowa challenging state’s ban on marriage equality

In December, Iowa’s Supreme Court wil hear a case which challenges their state’s ban on marriage equality. Each side of this argument will have 30 minutes to make their arguments.

A Polk County judge, last year, struck down a state law limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples stating that it violated constitutional rights of due process and equal protection.

Anybody in Iowa care to comment on this? What’s your feeling on how most of Iowa feels (or at least the gay and straight people in your world that you know.)

Connecticut Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Awesome! Now we have 3 states in the United States that don’t discriminate against the people who live in their states (if only those states could knock some sense into the rest of ‘em!)

There was 85 pages to their decision and with a 4-3 decision gay marriage became legal in Connecticut.

“In accordance with these state constitutional requirements, same sex couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry,” said the majority opinion, which was written by Justice Richard N. Palmer.

Gay couples will most likely be allowed to marry in 20 days. This, of course, is dependent upon attempts by opponents of gay marriage that want to delay the ruling with procedural tactics.

The Assembly is expected to update the marriage laws in January when they are back in session.

But let me warn you fine folks of Connecticut…this still isn’t over. Just like the folks in California who are against gay marriage were able to get a measure put on the November ballot there WILL be the same type of folks in Connecticut that will try to do the same thing. Be aware of this and tell all family and friends to vote accordingly.

Why people can’t butt out and mind their own damn business is behind me. When will straight people learn that the ONLY threat to marriage is DIVORCE!

Orlando grants health benefits to same-sex partners

Mayor Buddy Dyer, in Orlando, Florida, proposed to allow municipal workers to get health benefits for their same-sex partners.

The city council accepted this proposal unanimously earlier in the week. Orlando is the first city in Central Florida that allows such benefits. There are, however, more than 20 cities throughout Florida that have already granted these benefits prior to this ruling.

I feel sorry for Sarah Palin

Ok even though I’m an Obama supporter I wanted to tell you all that I feel sorry for Sarah Palin and why.

Ok first, I saw the interview with Charles Gibson (thanks to youtube) and boy did I feel she came off like a twit. I though to myself “OMG what is wrong with the Republicans that they’d pick this nutjob as the Vice Presidential nominee!” But I didn’t care…better fo us Democrats, because the world isn’t crazy enough to vote for a whack-job like her that is one heartbeat away from President, right?

So I just chuckled at her and how well umm for lack of a better word DUMB she appeared (grant it, I know she can’t be all that dumb since she’s gone as far as she did thus far, but boy she sure does come off like a big giant dope.)

Anyway, I laughed it up and I even laughed harder at the SNL skit that they did with Tina Fey as Palin and she was talking to Hillary Clintion, etc. That was hilarious. If you haven’t seen that skit, you must watch it! I don’t care if you are a dem or repub that is some funny stuff.

So I just laughed at her when I seen her or heard her until………I youtubed (thank you again) the interview she had with Katie Couric. Let me tell you that while I was watching that interview I actually felt sorry for Sarah Palin, because well quite frankly she isn’t reaady to be in this position that she’s in. I know that even though you’re not ready to run for VP of the U.S. that if you are asked, you’re probably gonna jump at the opportunity anyway, but gosh, this woman basically just got thrown into this and she shouldn’t have.

That made me feel sorry for her. I mean it’s hot her fault she looks like a deer caught in the headlights sometimes, it’s not her fault that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about sometimes, it’s not her fault she sounds like a dope more often then not. She shouldn’t be in this position and I have no idea what McCain and the Republicans were thinking (actually I do, but come on, you couldn’t have picked better woman running mate?)

Anyway, does anyone agree with me? Did ya’ll see that interview? Or any of her interviews? Am I seeing things or does she really appear to be a dope?

By the way, just for the record I do want Sarah Palin to know that I, as a lesbian, do TOLERATE her.

Who saw the VP debate last night??

Sooo, whether you’re for Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin, what did you think of the VP debate last night? More specifically, what did you think about the portion of the debate where they talked about same-sex couples rights and same-sex marriage??

I want to hear your opinions on this. Here’s my take on Obama. I like the guy even though he doesn’t support gay marriage per se. He’s the only candidate that I’ve ever seen talk about gay issues in front of a general audience, not in front of just a gay audience. You know what I mean?

I mean anyone can talk bout gay issues in front of a huge gay audience, but I’ve never seen any candidate running for President talk about gay issues in front of huge audiences that aren’t necessarily gay, except for Obama. Remember, when he talked about gay issues in that black church and told the people that they need to support their gay brothers and sisters?

Even during his acceptance of the President nomination he spoke about gay issues in front of the entire world, not just on a gay channel or to a gay newspaper. Get what I’m saying here?

I believe that he believes that gay couples should have the same rights as heterosexuals, he just doesn’t believe in the MARRIAGE word. Now, I completely think that’s b.s. because that’s falling just shy of the same rights as heterosexuals, but it’s a good step in the right direction, if you ask me.

And when Palin said that she is TOLERABLE and would TOLERATE any adults right to choose who they wantedo be with I just wanted to kick her in the teeth :-) (in a nice way, of course.)

Anyway…..let me hear your thoughts on the VP debate and even on your feelings about Obama or McCain when dealing with gay rights issues.

Take Action Today Pennsylvania!

Well I received email from Equality Advocates PA asking for me to take action in regards to HB 1400, which is legislation to amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to prohibit discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in employment, housing, and public accomodations.

You want to send your letter to the House State Rep of your district. I live in Oxford, PA, so I’m in District 13 and Art Hersehy is my House State Rep (I’m probably on his nerves as I just sent him an email yesterday asking him to take action on the Property Tax Elimination Act. And now I’m emailing him today too about HB 1400 hehehe)

If you want to find out who your House State Rep is then go here.

After you find out who he or she is then email, hand write, visit or call them but say the following:

Subject: Please Vote HB 1400 out of State Government Committee!

Dear (insert their name),

Please vote House Bill 1400 out of State Government Committee! This important bill would amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to prohibit discrimination in employment, housing, and public accomodations because of one’s sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

I feel it is important for all members of our society to be protected from discrimination.

An overwhelming majority of Americans believe that hard working and law-abiding citizens should not be discriminated against in the workplace, yet under Pennsylvania law, it is legal to fire someone simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

I ask that you take a stand for equality by supporting civil rights bills that protect lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender Pennsylvanians from discrimination, and voting this bill out of committee!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Your Name
Your Address (including zip.)

I added a little more to my email but overall it says the same thing. Here are a few more points you can touch on if you like:

- Current PA law provides basic legal protection against discrimination on the bases of race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, handicap or disability, education and the use of a guide dog, but not sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression

- Twenty states have already amended their state civil rights laws to protect against this type of discrimination

- All 27 Fortune 500 companies headquarted in PA prohibit discrimination based upon sexual orientation

- Although several municipalities protect its citizens against this discrimination by local ordinence, 79% of Pennsylvanians are not covered by non-discrimination protections

Ok that about does it for this issue folks. Please take action and then report back here and let us all know what your Rep. said (Art Hershey was pretty good at getting back to me about my issue yesterday, so we’ll see how he does with a gay and lesbian issue in our uptight, conservative and republican district!)
