Mayor Ralph Becker had promised something for unmarried partners and he and lawmakers finally delivered the Mutual Commitment Registry.

Partners were allowed to start registering on Thursday. It is available for unmarried couples who live in an interdependent relationship. Three (3) pieces of proof must be presented to the County Recorder’s to prove such a relationship (i.e. mortgage with both names on it, joint bank account, power of attorney, etc.) After registering the couples receive a certificate.

This certificate can be used to get get domestic partner benefits such as health care, if provided by ones job also registered couples have visitation rights for each other at hospitals, etc.

If you live in Salt Lake City and you’d like to learn how to register for the Mutual Commitment Registry then just click here.

Also, I’d like to hear from folks in Salt Lake City if you are out there…what do you think of this Mutual Commitment Registry and do you ever feel there is hope of getting rid of that state amendment which states marriage is a union only between a man and a woman?
